TLDR

  • Arda launched from stealth with $232M in total funding, including a $160M Series A at a $1.5B valuation.13
  • Altimeter, Accel and Khosla co-led; CNBC reports $230M, and Dealroom credits Altimeter alone with the lead.124
  • Anduril was its first design partner and customer, and uses the software inside its ArsenalOS.1

Arda Industries, a San Francisco startup founded by Bob McGrew, a former OpenAI chief research officer, announced on 20 October 2026 that it is launching from stealth with $232 million in funding.1 The total is a $160 million Series A at a $1.5 billion valuation, co-led by Altimeter, Accel and Khosla Ventures, plus an earlier $72 million seed round led by Accel and Founders Fund.1 XYZ Venture Capital, 8VC, SV Angel and Felicis joined the Series A, and Khosla and XYZ Venture Capital took part in the seed, according to the release.1 On that wording Accel, Khosla and XYZ are returning investors, while the release names Altimeter, 8VC, SV Angel and Felicis only in the Series A. The Next Web reports the same split.3

The reports differ on the headline numbers. CNBC says Arda told it the company had raised $230 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, in a round led by Altimeter Capital, Accel and Khosla Ventures.2 Dealroom's summary says the raise was led by Altimeter Capital and that available reporting offered little detail on the amount or on investors beyond Altimeter.4 The $232 million figure and the three-way co-lead come from the company's release.1

Arda sells software that turns a product design into a working assembly line. Its AI agent works from CAD files and other design artefacts, so a design change can reach the factory floor without halting production, according to the release.1 McGrew told CNBC it is "a user interface and an agent that does for manufacturing engineers what Claude or Cursor does for programmers".2 Anduril was the first design partner and customer and uses Arda inside its ArsenalOS manufacturing software, the release says. It reports that Anduril found basic work instructions that took 10 hours now take 15 minutes, and complex engineering workflows that took up to 30 hours now take about 2.5 hours.1 Those figures are the company's own. Arda is starting in defence and the data-centre supply chain, with consumer electronics next, and is prototyping AI agents that program robots to carry out its assembly plans.1

Altimeter's Apoorv Agrawal led the round for the firm and met McGrew when both worked at Palantir, CNBC reports. He told CNBC that manufacturing is a $3 trillion industry in the US alone and that "the price is steep today, but the long-term opportunity is very high".2 Dealroom reads the deal as a defence bet, arguing that the reconfigurable-factory concept "positions industrial infrastructure itself as a defense capability".4

The co-leads have backed other defence and industrial companies. Altimeter took part in Hadrian's $1.37 billion Series D at a $7.87 billion valuation in August 2026, and Altimeter partner Erik Kriessmann said he was proud to partner with the company, which builds factories for defence, aerospace and industrial systems.5 Khosla Ventures led the $350 million Series C of Hermeus, which is developing high-Mach unmanned aircraft for national security missions, in April 2026.6 Accel led the $100 million Series B of Twenty, a startup building AI-enabled offensive cyber systems for the US military and intelligence community, in June 2026.7

Why it matters: a $1.5 billion valuation at launch for a manufacturing-software startup whose first customer is a defence technology company suggests investors see factory engineering, not only the weapons themselves, as a bottleneck worth funding, though the sources give no revenue figures and the Anduril results are company-reported.
