Viral Paris robbery photo is AI
TLDR
- Two AI-generated photos of an elderly couple "robbed" by rioters in Paris drew millions of views on X.12
- Detection tools flagged the images, but sources split on whether Google's SynthID or an OpenAI watermark did so.123
- No official source has confirmed the alleged assault, and the Paris prosecutor's office had no information on it.12
Two AI-generated images claiming to show an elderly couple stripped to their underwear by rioters after France's 17 October protests have spread across X, fact-checkers report.123
Why it matters: the images fed claims about Muslims, Jews and the unrest. Sharers included the SCSI police officers' union, which flagged the facts as unconfirmed before deleting its post, and US commentator Alex Jones.12
Driving the news:
- TF1 Info traced two images: the first, set in Place de la République, appeared just after midnight and stayed obscure; the second, in a dark alley, was posted shortly before 12:30 that day by an account X places in Israel.2
- France 24, with the EBU's Spotlight network and RTBF, traced one image to a montage of AI images posted late on 17 October by the pro-Israel account Infos-Israel.news.1
- The tells include a four-fingered hand, a masked figure with two heads and a bollard unlike Parisian ones.12
- France 24 says SynthID found OpenAI traces on both images, while TF1 says OpenAI's own detector found its invisible watermark on both; Chequeado says Google's SynthID Detector flagged the viral image.123
By the numbers:
- "Nearly 4 million" views on X, per the Brèves de presse account cited by Paris Match.5
- "Tens of millions" of views for the second image, per TF1 Info.2
- More than 50,000 posts in French and as many in English, per TF1 Info's Visibrain data.2
The big picture: the assault story began when BFMTV's Dominique Rizet said on air, citing a police source, that an elderly couple had been attacked; he told France 24 the information was "confirmed".1 Other outlets repeated it, and Paris Match says those articles have since been deleted.5
The other side: the debunk covers the photos only, not whether an attack happened. About 48 hours after the alleged incident the Paris prosecutor's office had received no report, per Libération's CheckNews as relayed by France 24, and TF1 says it has no information and urges caution.12 Newtral also reports no police confirmation.4 The detector attribution differs across outlets, so which tool flagged which image is unresolved here.123
Single-source note: the photos' fakery is confirmed by several independent checks, but Chequeado, Newtral and Paris Match relay work by Libération and Maldita that was not reviewed directly.345
Update, 21 October 2026: fact-checkers have since debunked AI-generated Eiffel Tower fakes tied to the same unrest. NewsGuard identified two viral videos, one showing protesters unfurling a giant Palestinian flag from the top of the tower and one showing the tower engulfed in flames, and found both AI-generated; one X post of the flag video drew 3.7 million views and one X post of the fire video 11.6 million.6 A press officer for the company that operates the tower told NewsGuard on 19 October that no such incident occurred and that the tower sustained no damage.6 NewsGuard cites visual tells, including protesters about twice human size and a red-and-white striped antenna where the real one is pale yellow, plus detector scores: IdentifAI 100 per cent and Hive 63.5 per cent for the flag video, and Hive 98 per cent and Detect Video AI 90 per cent for the fire video.6 Full Fact traced the earliest version of the flag video it could find to an Instagram account describing itself as an "audiovisual and AI content creator", whose Spanish caption labels it "unreal content - AI", and Meta's AI detector found AI signatures.7 India Today's check found the flag at the top resembles Jordan's rather than Palestine's, with distortions in the tower's grills and a person hanging from a rope at an implausible height, and Meta's detector also found AI signatures; its other detector scores ranged from 48.8 to 72 per cent.9 A Palestinian flag was displayed on the tower on 15 May by Extinction Rebellion France, but on the first level, not the top.79 Full Fact separately found that a still image of protesters with fireworks and Palestinian flags at the foot of the tower carries an invisible SynthID watermark indicating OpenAI tools, and traced it to a satirical article published on 6 October.8
