Harbinger raises a $240M Series D, co-led by Tiger Global, Capricorn and Ridgeline, to push its electric truck platform into defence and power
TLDR
- Harbinger, a medium-duty electric truck maker, raised $240M in a Series D co-led by Tiger Global, Capricorn and Ridgeline.12
- The money funds trucks, energy storage, power, autonomy and defence; valuation and the split between them are undisclosed.13
- Its Army work runs through partner American Rheinmetall's contract, not a Harbinger award.4
Harbinger announced on 5 November that it has raised $240M in Series D funding, co-led by Tiger Global, Capricorn's Technology Impact Fund and Ridgeline.1 Bloomberg reported the round first, ahead of the company's release, and TechCrunch says so in its own report.25 The release headline says "Led by Tiger Global" but its text says "co-led" by the three firms, so the co-lead wording is used here.1 Other named investors include Fidelity Management & Research Company, Squarepoint Capital, Xantium, Maniv, Greycroft, Australian Gulf Capital, PanaceaVC, ArcTern Ventures and Leitmotif, with FedEx and THOR Industries investing "through TechNexus" and BuildGroup as a strategic investor.1 The round comes almost a year after a $160M Series C.2 None of the sources read for this article gives a valuation, current production capacity or how the money divides between the trucks and the newer businesses.3
Harbinger, which Garden Grove, California datelines as its base, makes Class 4 to 6 chassis in all-electric and plug-in hybrid versions and designs its own powertrain, battery system, steering and brakes.13 The company says it has raised "over $650 million" since its 2021 founding; TechCrunch dates the founding to 2022.12 That total does not add up from earlier reporting: Axios said in June that a $160M round brought the total to $358M, which with $240M gives about $598M, and the gap is unexplained.6 The release says FedEx ordered 2,000 trucks in a deal valued at more than $300M, and FedEx's Paul Melander has joined the board.1 It states the proceeds will support "commercial vehicles, energy storage systems, power generation, autonomy software and defense applications" and the ramp-up of medium-duty manufacturing.1 TechCrunch adds that Harbinger is reportedly weighing an IPO, which the company has not confirmed.2
The defence push is recent. In May, American Rheinmetall and Harbinger announced a partnership to field uncrewed ground vehicles, and the release describes "Harbinger's dual-use hybrid chassis" as the base for an uncrewed military vehicle.7 In June, Axios reported a defence unit and In-Q-Tel backing, with an undisclosed amount, and quoted the chief executive saying "We are selling what is still, fundamentally, a truck platform."6 The same report cites the chief executive's claim that Harbinger could build thousands of uncrewed hybrid-electric vehicles a year, which is a company claim and not confirmed.6 In July, American Rheinmetall was awarded an 18-month US Army contract for Project Sustainment through the National Advanced Mobility Consortium, with Harbinger supporting delivery; the contract value is not stated.4 Harbinger is a partner on that programme, not the contract holder, and FreightWaves describes the Army programme as in a prototype phase with no contract value disclosed.34
On the investors, Tiger Global's Griffin Schroeder said: "Harbinger excels at electrification, and electrification has become one of the most pressing bottlenecks of the AI era."1 In the same field, Tiger Global led the 2022 Series B of FORT Robotics, a safety layer for autonomous machines, and has committed about $20M more ahead of a planned listing.8 Ridgeline says it invests across hardware, automation and defence, closed Fund II at over $180M with FedEx among its limited partners, and is in the first group of small-business investment company licensees under the US Office of Strategic Capital.9 No defence investments by Capricorn's fund appear in the sources reviewed.
Why it matters: a $240M crossover-led round for a commercial truck maker that now builds uncrewed military vehicles shows investors paying for a dual-use manufacturing base before defence revenue is visible, since the Army work is a prototype-stage programme held by a prime and its value is undisclosed.134
