TLDR

  • Helicon, a Los Angeles composites startup, emerged from stealth with a $16.5M seed round led by AlleyCorp.12
  • It makes composite drone frames with robots and Argos software, at 5 to 15 minutes per cycle, it says.1
  • Single-source: coverage found rests on the company's release and a co-founder's post, and no customers are named.12

Helicon, a Los Angeles composites startup, announced on 20 October 2026 that it has emerged from stealth with $16.5 million in funding, according to Tectonic, which received the news as an exclusive release.1 AlleyCorp led the round, with participation from Buckley Ventures and Mike Chalfen. Angel investors including Eileen Tanghal, Gokul Rajaram and Charlie Songhurst also joined.1 Co-founder Edmundo Sanz-Gadea calls it a seed round in a LinkedIn post.2 Neither source says which investors are new or existing.

Helicon makes fibre-reinforced composite structures for drones, starting with frames. CEO and co-founder Alex Niehaus told Tectonic the money will scale an automated production line for composite structures for Group 1 to 3 drones, "FPVs all the way up to LUCAS".1 Its Argos software takes a component design and automates much of the engineering, mould design, simulation and production planning. Robots then position the composite material in moulds, extract the finished parts and trim them, and automated inspection feeds back into the process.1 The company says each frame takes "5-15 minutes per cycle, versus hours for industry-standard composite processes".1 Tectonic notes that much of the FPV frame supply chain is concentrated in China.1

On scale, Niehaus said Helicon has a 36,000-square-foot facility in Torrance, California, large enough to make over a million Group 1 to 2 drone frames a year, and fewer than ten customers with "extremely high volume requirements". He declined to name them.1 He also said lead times for parts of four to six weeks should fall to two weeks within six months.1 These are the CEO's own statements and have not been independently checked.

This is a single-source story. Tectonic's report rests on the company's release and an interview with its CEO, and the only other item found is a co-founder's LinkedIn post. No independent second report was found.12

On the lead: AlleyCorp led the €4.6 million round of Rift, a French company building an on-demand aerial reconnaissance network of drones, in November 2025, with OVNI Capital also in the round.3 It also took part in Portal Space Systems' $50 million Series A in April 2026, led by Geodesic Capital and Mach33; satcom.digital calls AlleyCorp a returning investor in the maker of rapidly manoeuvrable spacecraft.4 The sources reviewed name no defence or dual-use companies backed by Buckley Ventures.

Why it matters: the round suggests investors see airframe production, not the drones themselves, as a place to fund in the US drone supply chain, though the traction claims are the company's own and rest on a single report.
