Viral Hormuz iPhone videos are AI
TLDR
- Al Jazeera traced the "iPhones in Hormuz" clips to an Instagram account that posts AI-made fictional stories.1
- CNN Arabic found AI tells in the video, and Hive Moderation scored it 99.9 per cent AI.2
- The GFS Pride sinking was real; Al Jazeera could not verify the claim it carried iPhones.12
Videos of people gathering iPhones and luxury perfume from the Strait of Hormuz after a container ship sank are AI-generated, not real footage.123
Why it matters: Iranian accounts presented the clips as a "clear punishment" for ships that ignore Iran's transit directions, so synthetic video was being used as messaging in a live shipping dispute.1
Driving the news:
- The clips claimed to show Iranians collecting iPhones and perfume after a ship sank in the strait.1
- Al Jazeera's Open Source Unit reverse-searched them to an Instagram account, Nativora, that describes itself as posting fictional cinematic nature and wildlife stories made with AI.1
- Al Jazeera cites mixed winter and summer clothing, distorted figures and a garbled "iPhone" on a box; CNN Arabic cites odd finger counts, crooked horizons and shifting ship details.12
- BBC News headlined a 16 October video "Free iPhones in the Strait of Hormuz? No, these are AI fakes".3
By the numbers:
- About 80 million views across the account's iPhone and perfume scenes, per Al Jazeera.1
- About 3 million views on one X account's repost of the first clip, per Al Jazeera.1
- 88 per cent AI likelihood from the AI Video Detector tool, per Al Jazeera; 99.9 per cent from Hive Moderation, per CNN Arabic.12
The big picture: the ship loss is real. The Revolutionary Guard navy said on Wednesday 14 October that a container ship hit a sea mine on a route it called unauthorised, and navigation data named the vessel as GFS Pride.1 Singapore's maritime authority said the Singapore-flagged ship was damaged and caught fire before it sank.2 Al Jazeera says Iran has restricted Hormuz traffic since April 2026.1
The other side: Al Jazeera says Iranian platforms posted clips on 15 October of fishermen collecting "war spoils" from an Arab container ship that hit Iranian mines and carried iPhone 18s and perfume, a narrative it could not verify.1 It adds that the AI scenes drew on those posts to depict containers and scattered cargo.1 The two detector scores differ, and neither outlet says whether it scored the same clip.12
Single-source note: the trace to the Nativora account and the view counts come from Al Jazeera alone. CNN Arabic names no origin account, and the BBC page reviewed carries only its headline, so it is cited for its conclusion.123
