Imagery backs Marinovka Su-34 strike claim
TLDR
- Ukraine's Navy said on 29 October that a Neptune strike destroyed two Su-34s at Marinovka airfield, with no visual proof.23
- AviVector and CyberBoroshno published 30 October satellite imagery they say shows the destroyed aircraft at their usual parking positions.1
- Kyiv Independent could not independently verify the claim; the imagery was not reviewed here.2
Ukraine's Navy said on 29 October that it destroyed two Su-34 fighter-bombers with Neptune missiles at the base of Russia's 11th Mixed Aviation Regiment, near Oktyabrsky in the Volgograd region.23 A day later, two Ukrainian analytical accounts published satellite imagery they say supports the claim.1
Why it matters: the Navy statement came without visuals, so the later imagery is the first outside check of the claim.2 It is still imagery posted by accounts on the Ukrainian side, relayed by Ukrainian outlets.
Driving the news:
- The AviVector project published a satellite image taken on 30 October, which it says shows the wreckage at parking positions near the hangars.1
- CyberBoroshno published before and after images and said the destroyed jets sat in their usual parking positions. Its reading is that the strike targeted those positions rather than random points on the airfield.1
- Militarnyi recalls that satellites detected a fire at Marinovka on the night of 29 October, after a drone threat was reported there.4
- President Volodymyr Zelensky later confirmed the destruction of the two jets on 29 October and said Ukrainian forces also hit an Iskander launcher, per Kyiv Independent.2
The big picture: Kyiv Independent places the strike after the 15 October Neptune attack on Borisoglebsk airfield, which it says destroyed four Su-34M and damaged two more.2 Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) estimated that Russia had about 140 Su-34s in service as of 22 October, and that 43 have been destroyed and seven damaged since the full-scale invasion.2
The other side: Kyiv Independent says the Navy provided no visual confirmation and that it could not independently verify the claim.2 None of the sources cited here carries a Russian statement on the strike.
Single-source note: the strike claim rests on the Ukrainian Navy, and the imagery on AviVector and CyberBoroshno as relayed by Oboronka. The images themselves were not reviewed here, and the HUR fleet figures are Ukrainian intelligence estimates.
