Trucks cross new Yalu bridge
TLDR
- Imagery of 16 October appears to show about 70 trucks loading or unloading at the bridge's North Korean customs site.1
- The old Friendship Bridge's Dandong truck yard showed little activity on the same day.1
- Radio Free Asia's anonymous sources say North Korean trucks crossed empty at the 15 October opening ceremony.3
Commercial satellite imagery from 16 October indicates significant truck traffic from China began crossing the New Yalu River Bridge a day after its official opening, 38 North reports.1
Why it matters: the cable-stayed bridge between Dandong and Sinuiju was completed in 2014 but never officially opened, and 38 North calls it a new, larger primary trade path between the two countries.12 Sanctions on several North Korean exports remain in place.4
Driving the news:
- On the North Korean customs side, around 70 trucks appear to be loading or unloading at warehouses, with more parked or staged and cargo containers across the site, per 38 North.1
- On the Chinese side, ten trucks are lined up in the street waiting to enter the customs facility, and nearly 30 are queuing inside to cross.1
- Reuters reported trucks with Chinese flags waiting on the bridge before the 15 October ceremony, which Xinhua said took place that day.2
By the numbers:
- About 70 trucks at North Korean warehouses; roughly 40 queuing on the Chinese side.1
- The bridge is 3,026 metres long with four lanes, per SBS.4
- China's exports to North Korea reached a six-year high of $2.3 billion last year, up 25 per cent, still well below pre-2017 levels, per Reuters.2
The big picture: analyst Lim Eul-chul told Reuters the bridge is unlikely to lead immediately to a full-scale return to pre-sanctions trade, but will help move heavy equipment, raw materials and energy products.2 SBS notes restrictions on North Korean coal, seafood and textile exports and overseas workers remain, and reports concern that easier trade in livelihood goods and detour transactions could eventually neutralise the sanctions.4
The other side: accounts differ on how ready the crossing is. Reuters said approach roads and a customs compound on the North Korean end remained unfinished at the time of the ceremony, while 38 North says construction appeared complete in early September.12 Radio Free Asia, citing two anonymous North Pyongan sources, says trucks from China carried goods while North Korean trucks ran empty, blamed on central approval of contracts still pending; some expect normal clearance only from March.3 The imagery shows activity, not cargo contents, and 38 North says further imagery is needed to discern the flow of trucks.1
Single-source note: the truck counts rest on one set of 16 October imagery (©2026 Vantor) analysed by 38 North, and no second imagery analysis was reviewed. The Radio Free Asia account relies on anonymous sources we could not verify.13
