Pelagon emerges from stealth with an undisclosed inception round from Seedcamp, Bpifrance, Elaia and Hexa to guard underwater infrastructure

TLDR

  • European start-up Pelagon left stealth with an inception round from Seedcamp, Bpifrance, Elaia and Hexa; the amount is undisclosed.12
  • It sells AI acoustic sensing and an underwater interceptor to protect ports, energy sites and subsea networks.23
  • Its only reported customer is civilian; the interceptor, meant for military buyers, has been tested but is not in use.1

Pelagon, a European maritime-security start-up, has come out of stealth with an inception round backed by Seedcamp, Bpifrance, Elaia and Hexa, plus defence entrepreneurs, families from the European defence industry and AI researchers from labs including FAIR and OpenAI, according to Seedcamp and Hexa.23 Resilience Media says the company did not disclose the amount, and none of the three sources names a lead investor or says which backers are new.123 Resilience Media lists Bpifrance, Seedcamp, Hexa and unnamed defence entrepreneurs but omits Elaia, which Seedcamp and Hexa both name.123 The money will go on growing the team and extending deployments, with Baltic and Black Sea deployments scheduled for 2026.2 Hexa adds that the team will cover AI research, software, signal processing, sales and institutional relations, and that it will start new deployments with navies and operators.3

Pelagon builds what it calls an Interdiction Dome to detect, identify and respond to underwater threats. It has four parts: PEARLS, a distributed sensor network; ORCA, an AI acoustic model; MARLIN, an underwater interceptor operated with human oversight; and Pelagon OS, the connecting software, all sold as a managed service.2 Seedcamp says its customers are "navies from European and Allied nations and civilian operators of ports, energy sites and subsea networks."2 Resilience Media reports a narrower picture: one civilian customer running a sensing network, a data visualisation system and an automatic classification system without the interceptor, which "has been tested" but is not in use and is "meant for military customers."1 The company says ORCA ran a live trial in Karlskrona, Sweden, in May 2026 and has been deployed commercially in the Mediterranean since August; no navy contract is named.23 Co-founders and co-chief executives Gauthier Bouxin, a former French Navy officer who later worked at McKinsey, and Aymeric de Pontbriand, founder of Scortex, began operations in early 2026, and Hexa says it built Pelagon alongside the founders and describes it as "European and ITAR-free."23 Resilience Media quotes Bouxin saying a Polish Baltic wind-farm operator asked "Can you come tomorrow?"1

Seedcamp also backed SE3 Labs, a €5.5M seed round led by Lakestar for defence-focused spatial AI.4 Hexa's first Sprint cohort was dedicated to European defence and sovereignty.5 Elaia's third deeptech seed fund, closed at €134M, targets areas including physical AI and robotics, though no defence or maritime holding was found.6 Bpifrance also manages Definvest, the French defence procurement agency's fund, which took a stake in connectors maker Esaris Industries; no source says Definvest is in the Pelagon round.7 Two of the sources are statements by backers, so Resilience Media is the only independent report.123

Why it matters: a start-up whose product is built for navies has raised its first money from European seed and state-linked investors while its only reported customer is civilian, showing how defence-leaning maritime sensing is being financed ahead of any named military contract.123 The signals to watch are a named navy trial and the Baltic and Black Sea deployments scheduled for 2026.2
