Reddit ends RSS and public API

· OSINT

TLDR

  • Reddit stops supporting RSS feeds on 13 November 2026 and ends remaining public API access in March 2027.12
  • Reddit offers no RSS replacement for anyone outside the communities they moderate.123
  • Reddit says RSS had become a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse.12

Reddit will switch off RSS feeds on 13 November and close its public Data API by March 2027, according to TechRepublic and MediaNama, which both report Reddit's 30 September posts on r/modnews and r/redditdev.12

Why it matters: investigators who watch subreddits through feed readers or alerts built on public Reddit feeds lose that route, and Reddit has offered nothing to replace it outside communities the user moderates.123

Driving the news:

  • 31 October 2026: Reddit stops accepting new requests for public API access.12
  • 13 November 2026: RSS feeds end. Moderators can move alerts to Discord Relay, an app on Reddit's Developer Platform.12
  • 12 January 2027: Reddit begins cutting off apps and users that have not registered or responded to Reddit's outreach.4
  • March 2027: public API access ends for all remaining apps and users.12
  • Heise says social-listening tools, research tools and AI assistants that draw on Reddit are affected, and MediaNama says they will need commercial deals after that.23

By the numbers:

  • More than 14,000 apps and bots have registered with the Developer Platform, per Reddit's migration update as reported by TechRepublic and MediaNama.12
  • A US$1 million migration programme may pay eligible apps US$1,000 each if they register by 30 November.12

The big picture: Reddit said in its 30 September posts that RSS had become a "common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse", per MediaNama, and TechRepublic reports the same rationale.12 MediaNama and heise both tie the move to Reddit's AI-licensing business, with Google and OpenAI named as its largest buyers, and to its lawsuits against Anthropic and Perplexity over scraping.23 Heise says it is unclear whether Reddit is mainly protecting the platform or the value of its data.3 Reddit has also tightened Old Reddit access and says its Developer Platform still has "capability gaps".12

What's next: MediaNama lists questions Reddit's posts leave open: whether academic researchers get any route outside commercial deals, what counts as having "engaged" before 12 January, and whether commercial pricing will be published.2

Single-source note: the dates are consistent across all three outlets, but Reddit's own posts were not reviewed directly and no pricing for commercial access has been reported.123 The Reddit Watch archive, which quotes the posts and Reddit's October Mod Monthly newsletter verbatim, matches the dates, the Discord Relay guidance and the migration programme terms, and attributes the 31 October, 12 January and March 2027 timeline to the newsletter.4
