Ukrainian intelligence says Russia now builds 4,000 jet-powered Gerans a month

TLDR

  • Ukraine's Defence Intelligence says Russia now produces 4,000 jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones a month.1
  • Militarnyi says Geran-2 output is about 2,000 a month, against 2,800 in August.1
  • Ukrainian intelligence says the shift reflects effective interception of slower Geran-2 drones by mobile fire groups.1

Russia has raised production of Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet-powered strike drones to 4,000 a month, about twice the output of the piston-engine Geran-2, according to Ukraine's Defence Intelligence, which gave the figures to the Ukrainian outlet NV.1 Militarnyi reports that Russia also makes around 2,000 Geran-2 drones a month.1 As recently as August, it says, the figures were around 3,000 jet-powered and 2,800 Geran-2 drones a month, which Militarnyi calculates as a one-third rise in jet output; Gwara Media's headline puts the rise at 25%, and the two outlets do not reconcile the figures.12

Ukrainian intelligence attributes the shift to the effectiveness of Ukrainian mobile fire teams against slower targets such as the Geran-2, and says the jet-drone production lines have already been adapted for further scaling.12 Gwara Media gives the jet-powered drones' speed as 400 to 500 km/h against 180 to 185 km/h for the classic Geran.2 Militarnyi adds that overall Russian output has reached about 10,000 drones a month including reconnaissance and decoy types such as the Gerbera, that the Alabuga special economic zone in Tatarstan remains the main hub, and that Russia holds an operational reserve of about 6,200 Geran drones.1 It also recalls an early October intelligence statement that Russia had localised the Geran-4 turbojet, replacing a Chinese-made engine.1 Both outlets rely on the same NV report, so they are not independent confirmation of the figures, which are unverified claims from Ukrainian intelligence.12

Why it matters: if the intelligence figures are accurate, Russia is shifting its mass-produced one-way attack drones toward faster jet designs that are harder for mobile fire groups to intercept, which would push Ukrainian defenders further towards interceptor drones and other fast-reaction systems; the numbers come from one Ukrainian intelligence statement and have not been independently confirmed.
