Iron Dome architect's start-up Skapion unveils native counter-swarm system, plans live-fire test within weeks
TLDR
- Skapion unveiled what it calls the first "native" counter-swarm defence system, designed to engage many drones at once.12
- It claims the system can engage more than 100 targets at once at an interception rate above 97%.12
- The claims stay unproven until a first live-fire test, expected within several weeks.3
Skapion unveiled what it describes as the world's first native counter-swarm defence system on 14 October.12 The company says most air defences were built to engage single targets or small groups, which limits capacity and cost efficiency against mass drone attacks. Its answer is a "many-to-many" architecture in which many interceptors engage many targets at once, designed by retired General Pini Yungman, architect of Iron Dome and former general manager of Rafael's air and missile defence division.12 The company has also announced a $36 million seed round led by UP.Partners and Khosla Ventures.12
The system is mobile and fully kinetic, with vertical launch and 360-degree coverage. Skapion claims it can engage more than 100 targets at the same time at an interception rate above 97%; both figures are the company's own and have not been independently tested.12 An AI-native command-and-control layer works with any sensor and can run autonomously or keep a human on the loop, depending on customer policy.12
The Jerusalem Post reports the interceptors have a range of roughly one to seven kilometres with an electro-optic or radio-frequency seeker, with hundreds of rounds possible per vehicle, and that the company has no plans for airborne platforms.3 CEO Ido Bar-On's target is about $10,000 per interceptor at scale, with around 40 systems and 3,500 interceptors costing about $400 million.3 The first live-fire test is expected within several weeks, using up to 50 interceptors with a proximity kill against small Class 2 and 3 drones, followed by an operational test evaluation next year.3
Why it matters: cheap one-way attack drones against expensive interceptors is the central cost problem in air defence, and a design built around mass simultaneous engagement at roughly $10,000 per round targets it directly, though the claims stay unproven until the live-fire test.
