US Army plans spring 2027 counter-drone event in Morocco, aiming to field kit within 180 days
TLDR
- The US Army's SETAF-AF will hold its first accelerated capability event, on counter-drone systems, in Morocco in spring 2027.13
- Up to 15 solutions will be assessed across five categories, with a goal of reaching soldiers within 180 days.23
- No vendors or contract value have been announced.2
US Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) announced on 16 October a partnership with the Army's Global Tactical Edge Acquisition Directorate (G-TEAD) to test emerging drone systems in Africa and deliver them to soldiers within 180 days.1 The first accelerated capability event, set for spring 2027 in Tan-Tan, will focus on counter-unmanned aircraft systems and force protection, targeting gaps in protecting early-entry command posts and operating locations against small drones.1 The Army says Africa offers an open spectrum, uncongested airspace and diverse terrain that ranges in the United States and Europe cannot easily match.1
Morocco World News reports that G-TEAD will validate up to 15 solutions with PAE Fires, which will act as the transition partner, against Group 1 to 3 small drones.3 It says soldier-led demonstrations are planned for February and March 2027, followed by an operational assessment in April and May during African Lion 2027, and that the five categories are an integrated fly-away kit plus small-drone detection, kinetic defeat, non-kinetic defeat and passive protection, with solutions integrating into the Army's Integrated Battle Command System-Maneuver.3 Business Insider Africa gives the same schedule and stresses that the 180-day figure is an objective rather than a confirmed delivery timetable.2
The Army describes a three-phase model of submission and preparation, soldier-led demonstrations and follow-on operational evaluation, and says G-TEAD teams already operate within US Army Europe and Africa, US Army Pacific and US Army Central.1 Business Insider Africa notes that no suppliers or contract value have been announced and that the event is separate from a drone and counter-drone purchasing framework joined by Egypt and Morocco on 13 October.2
Why it matters: the event shows the Army trying to shorten the path from counter-drone testing to fielding by using Africa's open spectrum and uncongested airspace and giving theatre commanders their own acquisition route; because no participants, funding or contracts are public and the 180-day period is a target, what soldiers actually receive after the 2027 assessment is still to be seen.
