Street signs expose fake Uman video

· OSINT

TLDR

  • VoxCheck found a video shared as Hasidim waving flags, including a Russian one, in Uman was filmed in New York.1
  • It spotted a "Crown Street" sign, which Uman lacks, and a "Post Mark-It" sign matched to Crown and Kingston Streets.1
  • Jewish News of Ukraine repeated the findings without verifying them, so there is one source here.12

A video presented as proof that Hasidic visitors waved Russian flags during celebrations in Uman was in fact recorded at a Sukkot celebration in New York, VoxCheck found by reading the street signs in the footage.1

Why it matters: the claim hangs entirely on where the clip was filmed, and VoxCheck's write-up shows that a street sign, a shop sign, Google Maps imagery and other posts from the same event were enough to undo that location claim.1

Driving the news:

  • Posts claimed Hasidim in Uman were waving various flags, including a Russian one, during celebrations. VoxCheck rated this false and published the check on 15 October as part of its partnership with Meta.1
  • A sign reading "Crown Street" in English appears in the frame, and VoxCheck says there is no such street in Uman.1
  • A second sign reads "Post Mark-It". VoxCheck found that this is a postal centre and accessories boutique at the intersection of Crown Street and Kingston Street in New York, and published a Google Maps photo showing the same patterns as the video.1
  • VoxCheck says other posts about the same event also place it in the Crown Heights neighbourhood of New York, which it describes as a centre of the ultra-Orthodox Chabad-Lubavitch movement where the Jewish community traditionally gathers for Sukkot.1
  • Jewish News of Ukraine summarised the check on the same day, saying the visible details allowed the filming location to be identified as Crown Heights.2
  • VoxCheck links to an earlier debunk of a claim that Hasidim calmly watched Ukraine's military recruitment officers detain a Ukrainian man at a bus stop.1

The other side: VoxCheck's finding concerns location only. Its write-up says the footage shows Sukkot celebrations in New York, but the text does not say what the flags in the video actually are, and it does not give the original poster, the platform, the date of first posting or how far the video spread.1

Single-source note: this rests on one fact-check, from VoxCheck. Jewish News of Ukraine's report restates it without independent verification, so the two entries should not be read as separate confirmations. Only Jewish News ties the two signs to Crown Heights directly; VoxCheck places the event there on the strength of other posts about it.12
