TLDR

  • Wing, KDDI and KDDI SmartDrone signed a drone delivery partnership for Japan on 27 October.12
  • First deliveries are targeted for select areas during 2027, including Lawson goods, with groceries and daily necessities first.13
  • Launch areas, delivery charges and how customers will order have not been disclosed.3

Wing Aviation, the Alphabet-owned drone delivery company, KDDI and KDDI SmartDrone signed a strategic partnership on 27 October to introduce drone delivery in Japan, according to a KDDI release.1 Wing supplies its autonomous aircraft, flight operations system and automated ground infrastructure, while KDDI and KDDI SmartDrone supply their communications network and their experience with regulatory procedures and deployment with local partners.1 The companies aim to begin delivering groceries and daily necessities, including Lawson products, in some areas during 2027, then widen the range of goods and areas together with municipalities and regional partners.1 CNET Japan reports that over-the-counter medicine and small retail items are planned for later, and that the companies have not disclosed the launch areas, delivery charges or how the service will be used.3

The release cites about 9.04 million people with difficulty accessing food, the driver shortage linked to Japan's "2024 logistics problem", and time pressure on dual-income households as reasons for the service, and says the partners also want drone delivery available after disasters.1 It puts Wing's record at more than one million residential deliveries, with thousands a day across five US markets, usually within 30 minutes of an order.13 DroneXL adds that KDDI has owned half of the Lawson convenience store chain since 2024, with Mitsubishi holding the other half, and that KDDI SmartDrone controls aircraft over the carrier's 4G LTE network so they can fly beyond the pilot's sight.2

Why it matters: the partnership pairs Wing's aircraft with a Japanese carrier's network and local regulatory experience, but with no launch areas or prices disclosed, 2027 is a target rather than a schedule.13
