Zimbabwe clears Drone Solutions for daily BVLOS medical drone deliveries
The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe has approved Drone Solutions International to run daily beyond-visual-line-of-sight drone deliveries connecting regional health facilities with central labs, after a six-month review of the aircraft, operating manuals, risk assessments, and airspace integration procedures.12 The approval covers Kite Aero's KITE aircraft, which flies 240 km one-way (or 115 km round-trip) with a 2.5 kg payload and up to 4 kg maximum, tracked through Kite Aero's AXIOM platform, which has logged more than 41,000 autonomous flights and 20,000 flight hours globally.1 Kite Aero CEO Philip van der Burg said "with AXIOM as the system of record it was easy to support Drone Solutions and CAAZ," while Drone Solutions CEO Jeremiah Musabayana said "CAAZ set a high bar, and rightly so," adding the company is "ready to start flying for our customers."1 KITE already holds BVLOS approval in 24 other jurisdictions; Drone Solutions plans to expand the service into Mozambique, Malawi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.1
Why it matters: Zimbabwe becomes the latest country to move a drone operator from demo flights to routine BVLOS medical logistics, the same regulatory step the US's still-pending Part 108 rule is meant to enable at scale.
